"Recién llegado de un viaje inolvidable. La fotografía de naturaleza ha sido solo un vehículo. Estábamos en algún lugar de Península Valdes haciendo fotos desde hacía varios días. Nunca había sentido la naturaleza tan de cerca, ni siquiera durmiendo en el impenetrable chaqueño, o en los Esteros del Iberá donde la naturaleza abunda. Fue una conexión indescriptible. Una mañana de sol y de un mar calmo, mientras estaba en la costa abrigado con polar, campera y borcegos, veo pasar una ballena muy cerca de la costa. Hace más de una década que hago fotografía de naturaleza y siempre el temor o el respeto me mantuvo a cierta distancia. Pero esta vez sentí algo distinto. Un impulso que me dio calor. Me saqué la ropa, mi cuerpo y mi ser necesitaban una conexión adicional con esas bestias del mar. Iba a meterme así al agua. Pero en un momento de claridad me puse el traje de neoprene. Corrí varios metros descalzo por la playa de canto rodado. No sentía ningún dolor al pisar las piedras. Estaba en éxtasis total. Tocaba el agua y no sentía frío. Mi respiración era profunda, mezcla de la corrida por la playa y de la adrenalina que sentía. Comencé a nadar con velocidad, pero luego me dije a mi mismo, momento, hagamos esto despacio. Estaba en un inmenso mar, y enfrente mío tenía una ballena con su cría en el lomo. Pensé en suavidad. El mar estaba muy calmo, y fue ahí que me relajé al 100% y busqué una conexión distinta. Llegué a ese límite de la restinga donde se notaba con claridad a través de las antiparras que había un precipicio debajo mío. En ese momento pensé que no cruzar ese limite podría ser mi mejor protección, ya que la ballena sabe perfectamente que no puede nadar en baja profundidad. Ahí me relajé aun más. Estaba solo en el agua. Levantar la cabeza y mirar una ballena que te hacía de muro a pocos metros de distancia fue una de las sensaciones más impresionantes que he sentido en toda mi vida. Este viaje me ha cambiado. Logré una conexión con la naturaleza como nunca antes había vivido. • ELEPHANT SWIM • ▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️ Location: #maetaeng ▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️ On a recent trip to the countryside of Northern Thailand I was sitting along the banks when I captured this aerial of elephants crossing the river. The relationship between elephants and water is so special to watch. A local village man was telling me despite their size how excellent swimmers Elephants 🐘 are. He said they swim fully submerged using their four legs to paddle and their trunk as a snorkel.
