ชุดไทยพระราชนิยม | The Eight Styles is known in Thai as “Phra Rajaniyom” (Royal Favour).

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and her aides had research conducted into historical records of royal dresses to develop and promote the eight styles of national costumes. Differences in form, fabric, and levels of formality characterize each style.

Queen Sirikit of Thailand (b. 1932) helped shape a new national dress for Thai women through her incredible wardrobe. In 1960, she joined King Bhumibol Adulyadej on a seven-month international tour to Europe and America. Knowing that the public would pay close attention to how she presented herself, Sirikit decided to design a wardrobe that incorporated her country’s unique cultural heritage while showing that Thai people were as modern as any other country.

To do this, she assembled a team of consultants and advisors that included both fashion designers and historians to help craft the right designs. The result was a new kind of national dress that honored the past while highlighting the modern Thai identity. ชุดไทยจิตรลดา | Thai Chitralada
ตั้งตามชื่อพระตำหนักจิตรลดารโหฐาน เป็นชุดที่ใช้ในพิธีกลางวันลักษณะทั่วไปคล้ายกับชุดไทยเรือนต้น แต่ต่างกันตรงคอเสื้อที่มีขอบตั้งแขนยาวจรดข้อมือ และผ้านุ่งป้ายเป็นผ้าไหมยกดอกมีเชิงหรือยกดอกทั้งตัว ใช้เครื่องประดับตามควร

Named after Chitralada Villa, Their Majesties’ residence in Bangkok, this long-sleeved, high-collared silk jacket and long plain silk or silk brocade wrap skirt is formal daytime attire. Her Majesty wore this style when welcoming official guests.

ชุดไทยเรือนต้น | Thai Ruean Ton
ตั้งตามชื่อพระตำหนักเรือนต้นในพระราชวังดุสิต เป็นชุดไทยแบบลำลอง ใช้ในโอกาสไม่เป็นทางการ ตัดเย็บด้วยผ้าฝ้ายหรือผ้าไหมลักษณะเป็นผ้านุ่งป้ายยาวจรดข้อเท้า ผ้าลายตามขวางหรือตามยาวก็ได้ เสื้อเป็นคอกลมตื้น ใช้ผ้าสีตามริ้วหรือเชิง จะเป็นสีเดียวกับซิ่นหรือสีตัดกันก็ได้ แขนสามส่วน ผ่าอก ดุมห้าเม็ด ใช้เครื่องประดับน้อยชิ้น

Made from silk or cotton, a jacket with three-quarter-length sleeves and an ankle-length plain or patterned wrap skirt denote this most informal of The Eight Styles. Thai Ruean Ton was named after a group of teal houses at the Dusit Palace in Bangkok. Her Majesty has worn this style on numerous occasions, such as the ceremony of the distribution of royal gifts to Buddhist monks (Kathin Ton).

Today, it is popular attire for Thai women attending engagement parties or religious ceremonies, and as uniforms for those in the hospitality industry.

ชุดไทยอมรินทร์ | Thai Amarin
ตั้งตามชื่อพระที่นั่งอมรินทรวินิจฉัยมไหยสูรยพิมานในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ใช้ในงานพระราชพิธี และงานพิธีกลางคืน มีลักษณะเหมือนชุดไทยจิตรลดา แต่ตัดเย็บด้วยผ้ายกไหมที่มีทองแกมหรือยกทองทั้งตัว ความสวยงามอยู่ที่เนื้อผ้าและเครื่องประดับ

Similar in appearance to Thai Chitralada, but more formal, this two-piece evening ensemble consists of a plain silk jacket paired with a long, wrapped skirt of silk and metal-thread brocade. It was named after the Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall in Grand Palace complex. Designed to flatter all figure types, Thai Amarin ensembles are often worn for welcoming parties, balls, or a royal birthday procession.

ชุดไทยดุสิต | Thai Dusit
ตั้งตามชื่อพระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาทในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ใช้งานพิธีเต็มยศกลางคืน ตัดเย็บด้วยผ้ายกไหมหรือยกทอง ผ้านุ่งจีบ เสื้อคอกว้าง ไม่มีแขน ปักด้วยดิ้นเงินดิ้นทองหรือลูกปัด

Taking its name from the Dusit Maha Prasat Hall in the Grand Palace, this dress is formal evening attire and is made of gold brocade with an elaborately embroidered bodice.

ชุดไทยบรมพิมาน | Thai Boromphiman
ตั้งตามชื่อพระที่นั่งบรมพิมานในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ใช้ในงานพระราชพิธีและงานพิธีกลางคืน เสื้อแขนยาว คอกลมมีขอบตั้ง ตัวเสื้อและซิ่นติดกันเป็นชุดเดียว ตัดเย็บด้วยผ้าไหมที่มีทองแกมหรือยกทองทั้งตัวก็ได้ นุ่งจีบแล้วใช้เข็มขัดไทยคาด

Thai Boromphiman is a one-piece dress with the long-sleeved plain bodice and stands collar. The silk and metal-thread brocade skirt with a sewn-in front pleat reflect the pleated hip wrappers worn by the women of the court in the nineteenth century. The style is named after Borom Phiman Mansion, on the grounds of the Grand Palace, and is worn for formal events and official ceremonies; it can also be worn by royal brides.

ชุดไทยจักรพรรดิ-Thai Chakraphat

Named for Chakraphat Phiman Hall in the Grand Palace, Thai Chakraphat is formal evening attire that features a metal-thread brocade skirt with a front pleat. Its strapless bodice is concealed beneath a separate pleated shoulder cloth, with a second, embroidered shoulder cloth on top. This style of dress may be worn for formal banquets and official dinners.

ชุดไทยจักรี | Thai Chakri
ตั้งตามชื่อพระที่นั่งจักรีมหาปราสาทในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ใช้ในงานพิธีกลางคืน ท่อนบนเปิดไหล่หนึ่งด้าน เป็นสไบสำเร็จซึ่งมีทั้งสไบปักหรือไม่ปักก็ได้ ตัดเย็บติดกับท่อนล่างซึ่งเป็นผ้านุ่งจีบ เป็นผ้าไหมยกทองทั้งตัวหรือยกเฉพาะเชิงก็ได้

A very formal gold or silver metal-thread brocade evening dress named after the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall at the Grand Palace, this style features a skirt with a front pleat and an attached traditional Thai shoulder cloth. It is often embellished with embroidery. Thai Chakri is worn primarily for royal ceremonies, but brides-to-be may also wear it for daytime engagement or wedding ceremonies.

ชุดไทยศิวาลัย | Thai Siwalai
ตั้งตามชื่อสวนศิวาลัยในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ใช้ในงานพระราชพิธีทั้งเวลากลางวันและกลางคืน เป็นชุดแบบเดียวกับชุดไทยบรมพิมานแต่ห่มสะพักทับเสื้ออีกชั้นหนึ่ง

A formal dress bearing the name of Siwilai Garden in the Grand Palace, it is worn for royal ceremonies or formal day or evening functions. The brocade bodice joined to a matching skirt with a front pleat, is completed with an attached shoulder cloth. Some Thai Siwilai dresses are also decorated with embroidery.
