อาจจินตนาการว่า ถ้าจักรวาลทั้งหมดเท่ากับโลก กาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผือก คงเหมือนเมืองเล็กๆบนโลก (Earth) เมือง
หนึ่ง และระบบสุริยะ (Solar system) ของเราเป็นเพียงหมู่บ้านหนึ่ง โดยมีโลกเป็น บ้านหลังหนึ่งในหมู่บ้านนั้น
แต่บ้านหลังนี้ มีมนุษย์ อาศัยอยู่จำนวน 7,184,055,534 คน จากทั้งหมด 233 ประเทศ (ตัวเลข11 ตุลาคม 2556)

อาณาเขตทางช้างเผือก :

จักรวาล (Universe) มีกาแล็คซี่ (Galaxy) มากถึง จำนวน 200 พันล้านกาแล็คซี่ มีทั้งขนาดใหญ่ และ ขนาดเล็ก
ปะปนกันไป โดยมี กาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผืิอก (Milky Way Galaxy) เป็นหนึ่งในจำนวนนั้น

ขนาดของทางช้างเผือก มีอาณาเขต 100,000 ปีแสง ภายในประกอบไปด้วย กระจุกดาว (Star cluster) ประเภท
ต่างๆ มากกว่า 200 กระจุก บางกระจุก มีความหนาแน่น ของดาว (Star) นับหลาย แสนดวง ประเมินว่า กาแล็คซี่
ทางช้างเผือก มีดาว 200 - 400 ล้านดวง โดยยังไม่รวม ดาวเคราะห์ต่างๆ (Planet) ดวงจันทร์ (Moon) ดาวหาง
(Comet) และดาวเคราะห์ ในระบบสุริยะอื่นๆ (Extrasolar planet) อีกนับไม่ถ้วน

ถ้าความกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล ของทางช้างเผือก เปรียบได้เท่าสนามฟุตบอล ระบบสุริยะ (Solar system) ของเราทั้ง
หมดจะมีขนาดเล็ก เท่ากับลูกปิงปอง ที่ถูกทำหล่นไว้ในสนามฟุตบอล แทบไม่เห็นเมื่อ มองมาจากอัฒจรรย์ผู้นั่งชม
ในทางกลับกัน แม้ว่าขนาดทางช้างเผือกนั้น เหมือนจะยิ่งใหญ่ ถ้าเทียบกับพื้นที่ทั้งหมด ของจักรวาลแล้ว เป็นเพียง
จุดไข่ปลาเล็กๆ เพียงจุดหนึ่งเท่านั้น

สภาพแวดล้อมในทางช้างเผือก :

ด้วยจำนวนมากของดาว ภายในทางช้างเผือก จึงอัดแน่นไปด้วย กลุ่มเมฆหมอกโมเลกุล (Molecular clouds) มี
ทั้งเป็นบริเวณที่หนาแน่นมาก มืดดำทึบ เรียกว่า เนบิวล่ามืด (Dark Nebula) เป็นหย่อมๆ และมีบริเวณที่ใสสว่าง
เป็น เนบิวล่า (Nebula) แบบสวยสดใส อีกนับร้อยกลุ่ม

แต่เนบิวล่าเหล่านั้น กลับมีพิษสงร้าย เพราะเป็นแหล่งแผ่กระจาย ของรังสีอันตราย โดยเฉพาะบริเวณแนวสันร่อง
รังสี X ของ ทางช้างเผือก (Galactic X-ray Ridge) เป็นแนวสันร่องลึกลับ และยาวไป ตามระนาบ ของกาแล็กซี่
ถูกค้นพบหลายร้อยจุด เป็นมลพิษจากก๊าซ มีความร้อนสูงนับ 100 ล้านองศา

ใจกลางทางช้างเผือก ยังมีหลุมดำ ขนาดยักษ์ (Black Hole) แอบแฝงอยู่ อย่างใจเย็น คอยวันดูดกลืนดาว ที่โคจร
เข้าใกล้ หลุมดำในทางช้างเผือกมิได้มีจุดเดียว แต่มีกระจัดกระจายไปทั่ว สามารถโคจรเคลื่อนที่เปลี่ยนตำแหน่งได้
จึงเป็นเรื่องยาก ที่จะค้นพบสิ่งเหล่านี้

ตำแหน่งของโลก ในทางช้างเผือก :

ถ้าออกไปนอกกาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผือก แล้วมองกลับเข้ามา คงเห็นดวงอาทิตย์ (Sun) เป็นจุดเล็กๆ เหมือนดาวทั่วไป
เพียงดวงเดียวของระบบสุริยะ ไม่สามารถมองเห็น โลก (Earth) หรือดาวเคราะห์ดวงใดๆในระบบสุริยะได้ เพราะ
โลกมีขนาดเล็กมาก

ตำแหน่งของระบบสุริยะ ภายในทางช้างเผือก สูงจากแนวระนาบ กาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผือก 15 ปีแสง โดยมีระยะห่าง
จุดศูนย์กลาง ของกาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผือก ประมาณ 30,000 ปีแสง ดังนั้นจากโลก เราสามารถมองเห็นทางช้างเผือก
เพราะตำแหน่งโลกอยู่ด้านใน ของกาแล็คซี่ทางช้างเผือก
