Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, especially on Valentine’s Day. 💎This is a #WorldView2 satellite image of the Udachny mine in Russia. Russia is well known for diamond mining with having many of the biggest mines, including the Udachny mine. The Udachny mine accounted for 97% of Diamond production in Russia and 25% of the world’s rough diamond production in 2005. Diamonds in the area of the Udachny mine were discovered in 1955 and the mine started operating in 1967. The mine started off as an open pit mine, which was 630 meters deep, and it finished operations in the first half of 2015. The company is now in the process of developing an underground mine.
