ย้อนกลับไปในปี 1996 รัฐบาลยูเครนส่งคืนหัวรบนิวเคลียร์กว่า 1,900 ชิ้น ที่ตกค้างจากสมัยสหภาพโซเวียต กลับคืนให้รัสเซีย หลังจากนั้นเพียงไม่กี่วันรัฐมนตรีกลาโหมจากสหรัฐฯ รัสเซีย และยูเครน ร่วมกันปลูกดอกทานตะวันที่ฐานปล่อยขีปนาวุธเพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของโลกใหม่ที่ไม่มีระเบิดนิวเคลียร์

#DidYouKnow Sunflower have become the symbol of a world free of nuclear weapons. 🌻🌻🌻

On June 1, 1996, Ukraine transferred to Russia for dismantlement the last of the 1,900 nuclear warheads it had inherited from the former Soviet Union. Celebrating the occasion a few days later, the Defense Ministers of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States met at a former nuclear missile and planted sunflowers in a way to support a nuclear weapons free world.

Scientists believe that sunflowers at their full height can absorb large quantities of radioactive caesium, resulting in their growing presence across the nuclear-hit Chernobyl (Ukraine, 1986) and Fukushima (Japan, 2011)
